Self Reliance through Gardening

Part of "living on cents" and "preparing shelves" is finding ways to be more self reliant.  Not only does gardening save money, but it also can be very useful with teaching children and building a self esteem to see what you have created.  There are several ways to garden: and I think each person needs to choose the way that they enjoy the most.  I grew up with a grandpa that had a large area to farm and thus, I mimic much of what I learned.

The  most important thing I have learned throughout my years however; is to plant what you eat. If you don't like beets-don't plant beets.  If your family loves corn-plant more of it!  By planting what you eat, you will save money and possibly be able to freeze or preserve what you enjoy.

Having learned this lesson the hard way, this year we made sure to follow those guidelines.  We have our peas, onions (we use them for cooking and then I will make salsa), carrots, a few radishes (we mix the 2 together to help to thin the carrots), then a tomatillo plant (I am so excited about this), some peppers, tomatoes and different squashes and pumpkins.  Our kids helped plant everything and have loved watching items come up and grow.  We have been able to use the garden as many "teaching moments".  We also have found that if we go out every couple days, the chore of weeding is not as grueling and goes much quicker. USU is also a great resource for gardening and yard help.

What are some tricks you have for your garden? Or what kind of garden do you do?

Freebies at Smith's till tomorrow!

I wanted to let you know about some freebies at smiths!!!  This sale lasts till tomorrow and there are other great deals too!  (This just happened to be my favorite.) Savings of 100%!!!! (this is not always how shopping trips go.  Usually it is about 50% of savings)
I know some stores did pull this deal, however the Layton Smiths is still honoring it.  You buy 4 save $4.  So make sure you get them in 4's.  I actually had got some more the night before and wanted to fill my can rotator in that slot so went and got more.

The refried beans and both kinds of enchilada sauces are part of the promotion!  Let me know if you are able to stock up!

Case lot Comparisons

One of the best ways to get some short term food storage is through case lot sales!  This is the last week for most of these case lots, but I wanted to let you know they are happening.  This is not a comprehensive list by any means.  More of just the common items that you may be interested in.  If you look, a lot of times prices can vary about $.10 from store to store on any given item.  Initially, that may not seem like a lot but it adds up fast when you are buying in bulk.  All of this bulk is the Western Family brand (or Sure Savings).

Hopefully, this will give you a quick helper on where to save some money and stock up for your family.  I would much rather buy in bulk and save a little money (and know I have enough for several months) than run out week after week.

*note:  I have seen canned vegetables go down to $.33 so that may not be the best sale but if you are in need of some it would be great to pay $.50 opposed to $.68 or more.

Hidden Deals

Every week I go through the ads.  I find the deals that my family needs and then I pull my coupons for those items.  We save usually about 40-50% (sometimes even more) by doing this.  However, sometimes, I am able to find "Hidden Deals".

Hidden Deals are those deals you aren't prepared for.  The ones that are not advertised but can save you a LOT of money!  Hidden Deals are the reason you will see me with all my coupons at any store that I go to.

Here are some deals I found at Kmart.
Playtex Sport 18 count (regular and super) on clearance for $2.49 * Pair that with the $1.00 off coupon and a box was $1.49 ($.08 a tampon).
All of their clearance toys were an additional 30% off!  We got bracelets for $.35!
The children's clearance clothes are all an additional 40% off as well.  That makes several things very inexpensive.  We got thermal for the kids for next year and a few other things too.  Buying right now is a great way to save a little money for next year.  Sometimes, people get a little nervous about guessing sizes.  Think about the particular child you want to buy for.  Have they normally just done the normal growth or do they tend to sprout more at certain times.  Our boy has always been right on the size for his age, so I just have to think that way.  However, our girl is a size ahead so I make sure to get a size ahead of her age.

Buying things ahead of when you need it really can and does pay off!  It is a great way to stock up and be more prepared.

Food Storage Friday

What do you have in your 72 hour kits?  Having kits ready to go is so important in an emergency.  It is definitely a big part of being prepared.  I thought I would tell you some of the items we have and give you some ideas.  I am sure there are more things you could have, but here is a good start.

*with back to school sales right now, it is a great time to get a backpack for each member of the family :)  With some "keep yourself busy" items inside.

72 hour kits :)

-Food for 3 days.  We have THRIVE fruit and vegetables along with some ready made meals.  If you have little ones, make sure to put some snacks in there as well to help pass the time if need be.  We also have granola bars, fruit snacks and other items that do not perish.

- Water for 3 days.  They say to have 1 gallon per person.  If you have anything that will need additional water, you may want to add more water.

-A change of clothes for each person and a set of pajamas (that is one reason each person needs their own bag).  Undergarments

- Blanket/Sheet (ours are small little fleece blankets.  Not sure what others do...)

-Flashlight

-Lighter

-Diapers/Personal needs (I make sure to have plenty of diapers as well as items such as pads and tampons...  If you don't need them, someone else might....)

-Pen and paper

-Coloring books and crayons

-Flashcard/card games/travel games

-Pocket knife, rope, duct tape

- Eating utensils and plates (if you can find a mess kit on sale, those work GREAT)

-Medication:  This includes Tylenol for children and self.  Also Prescription medication as well.

-Hand sanitizer, toilet paper, dish soap, shampoo, body soap

-Cash

I know there are many other items that can go into a 72 hour kit (and not all kits will be identical).  Select the items that need to go into particular kits (for instance, you would not put a lighter in a toddlers bag... etc).

*** Look at your kit every 6 months!  (I do mine at conference time-during conference sometimes....)

If you have an other items that you put in your kits, let us know :)  I love seeing others kits and getting better ideas for my own
