Food Storage Friday

What do you have in your 72 hour kits?  Having kits ready to go is so important in an emergency.  It is definitely a big part of being prepared.  I thought I would tell you some of the items we have and give you some ideas.  I am sure there are more things you could have, but here is a good start.

*with back to school sales right now, it is a great time to get a backpack for each member of the family :)  With some "keep yourself busy" items inside.

72 hour kits :)

-Food for 3 days.  We have THRIVE fruit and vegetables along with some ready made meals.  If you have little ones, make sure to put some snacks in there as well to help pass the time if need be.  We also have granola bars, fruit snacks and other items that do not perish.

- Water for 3 days.  They say to have 1 gallon per person.  If you have anything that will need additional water, you may want to add more water.

-A change of clothes for each person and a set of pajamas (that is one reason each person needs their own bag).  Undergarments

- Blanket/Sheet (ours are small little fleece blankets.  Not sure what others do...)

-Flashlight

-Lighter

-Diapers/Personal needs (I make sure to have plenty of diapers as well as items such as pads and tampons...  If you don't need them, someone else might....)

-Pen and paper

-Coloring books and crayons

-Flashcard/card games/travel games

-Pocket knife, rope, duct tape

- Eating utensils and plates (if you can find a mess kit on sale, those work GREAT)

-Medication:  This includes Tylenol for children and self.  Also Prescription medication as well.

-Hand sanitizer, toilet paper, dish soap, shampoo, body soap

-Cash

I know there are many other items that can go into a 72 hour kit (and not all kits will be identical).  Select the items that need to go into particular kits (for instance, you would not put a lighter in a toddlers bag... etc).

*** Look at your kit every 6 months!  (I do mine at conference time-during conference sometimes....)

If you have an other items that you put in your kits, let us know :)  I love seeing others kits and getting better ideas for my own
